Selecting a Program for Registration
Impact reporting is designed to capture impact at the program level, so everything in the registry is organized around the concept of a social program.
What is a program?
A program is a distinct set of activities (core components) run by an organization that is intended to produce one or more social outcomes in a specific group of beneficiaries. An outcome is a measurable change in beneficiary status, behavior, or condition. A program must have a defined start and end date, usually (but not always) within a 1-year timeframe.
Examples of programs include:
- A program providing financial counseling services, workshops, credit reports, and debt reduction services to low-income households, toward building financial stability and meeting their housing needs.
- A program providing slow-paced, student-centered, small-group literacy instructions by trained volunteers to improve literacy in adults with limited literacy skills.
- A program working to decrease child hunger through the provision of nutritious meals to children in local schools who may not have access to food.
What is NOT a program?
While all organizations may conduct different activities for various purposes relevant to the organization or their funders, not all activities are considered programs. These types of activities are classified as unverifiable. Examples include galas, luncheons and one-time events not designed to produce any change in behavior, status, or condition.
How do you select a program?
When deciding what program to report on, consider the following:
- Significance to your organization: Choose a flagship program, a key focus of your organization, or a unique initiative that your organization would like to highlight its impact
- Availability of data: Consider whether the program has any existing data to demonstrate its impact
- Funder priority: If your membership was sponsored by a funder, the funder may expect you to report on the program that they support.
What if my funder supports general operations or multiple programs?
If you received general operation funding, you are not obligated to report on where the grant was spent if it’s unrelated to a social impact program (see above: what is NOT a program). But rather focus on one of the signature impact programs your organization runs. Funders usually want to understand what a typical program looks like, not an organization-wide impact or one-time events.
How to Get Started
If your organization is new to Impact Genome, begin by navigating to the Programs section and selecting Register New Program.
If your organization has previously reported on a program, skip the registration process and select Start New Report instead (see below for instructions).
If you are an existing organization adding a new program, select Register New Program.
1) To get started, log into your organization's terminal and navigate to the Programs section. Click the "Register New Program" or "New Program" button to begin.

2) Enter your program’s name and description. Focus on one specific social program (or project/intervention) that serves a defined beneficiary group and aims to achieve specific social outcomes. If your organization runs multiple programs, register each one separately.

3) When you click on Create Program & Start Impact Report, your program will be created, and you will be taken to the start registration process.
Select a Reporting Period
Enter your program’s reporting period based on its most recently completed cycle (e.g., fiscal year, calendar year, school year). The period must be at least 6 months and no longer than 12 months. Only past dates can be selected—future dates are not allowed.

Program Registration
Program registration is a 10-step questionnaire where you provide basic information about your program. The program registration data becomes your program profile.
You can save partial answers by clicking Save and Continue at the bottom of the page or clicking Save and Close to complete the registration at another time. You may also edit this information after the program has been registered.

What to Expect
Complete each section with your program’s basic information using the on-screen prompts. You must answer all questions to finish the registration process.
1
Program Overview
Provide your program’s official name, a brief description of what it does, the type of program, and the type of beneficiaries that the program primarily serves.2
Impact Areas & Outcomes
Explore social or environmental areas and outcomes your program addresses, and select one primary outcome your program intends to achieve for beneficiaries.
3
Beneficiary & Impact
Describe who your program serves, select relevant demographic or situational tags, and share the total number of people your program reaches during the program cycle.4
Program Cost & Funding
Provide the total expenses realized over the last program cycle, not the planned or expected budget set at the start.
Once you complete the registration process, you will have two options to choose from:
Start Full Impact Report: If you intend to become Impact Verified, select Start Full Impact Report to continue reporting and provide more detailed program information and data.
Return to Programs Page: This means that you have completed the registration, and you can return to the Programs Page and see the status of the program changed to Registration Complete. You can also start the Full Impact Report by clicking the Start Full Impact Report button next to the status for Impact Verification.
